Black Mold
Black mold, or Stachybotrys chartarum, is a toxic mold that is commonly found in damp places in houses, especially in bathrooms, where there is a lot of moisture and the room is not always well ventilated.
Black mold is a variety of microfungus that requires very high moisture content and thrives in water damaged buildings. This mold can cause many different health problems; it affects respiratory response and causes coughing and sneezing, irritation to eyes, skin rashes, nose and throat irritation, headaches and chronic fatigue. Not something you want to have growing in your home!
Combatting Black Mold On Your Bathroom Ceiling
Bathrooms are the perfect breeding ground for black mold – warm, humid and damp. The best way to combat the problem of black mold on your bathroom ceiling is to prevent it from growing in the first place.
So, if your bathroom is the dampest room in the house, how do you keep it mold free?
Install a good fan in the bathroom to keep the room ventilated, by sucking the moisture out of the air. Make sure that the fan is the correct strength for the size of the room.
Run the fan while you bath or shower and leave it on for half an hour after you’re finished until all the moisture has been removed from the air in the room.
Keep a small squeegee in the bathroom and before you get out the shower run it over the walls and glass shower doors. This small tip will help you get rid of much of the access moisture in the room.
Keep your bathroom textiles (rugs and towels) clean – these items are nice and warm, the perfect spot for black mold to grow, so make sure to put them in a hot wash often. And when they are not in the wash, don’t forget to dry them out between showers.
Make sure that the grout in your bathroom is sealed properly.
Check for leaks and if you find any fix them immediately.
If you have a window, leave it open after using the shower.
