How An Efficient Air Conditioner Prevents Mold

Mold is something you do not want in your home! But, the truth is that mold is a fungus, a natural part of the environment that is found all over and therefore it is difficult to control. Mold spores can enter our homes over the air or they can attack to people or pets who bring them into the house. And, as long as they have a warm environment in the house they will thrive.

Once the mold is detected in a house it should be removed immediately, because it quickly spreads and it is not only ugly to look at it can also be a health hazard for those who dwell in the house.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

It is best to try to prevent mold from growing in your home in the first place and the best way to do this is to make sure that it doesn’t have the conditions that it needs to help it grow and flourish.<

So, how can you keep your home mold-free? One of the easiest ways to keep your home mold-free if you live in a warm and humid area is to control the temperature in your home using your air conditioner. During the warm summer months set your air conditioner to a temperature between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit and make sure the relative humidity in your house doesn’t exceed 50 percent, molds thrive when the humidity levels exceed 70 percent.

Your air conditioner automatically dehumidifies the air as it cools but you may not be able to control the humidity level, so if you are situated in an area with very high humidity it is advisable to purchase a dehumidifier. It’s also advisable to leave your air conditioner or dehumidifier on at all times, even when you leave the house because the stagnant air during the warm months makes the perfect breeding ground for mold.

Another tip is to keep the air conditioner fan on the “auto” setting and not “on”, because “on” may cause moisture to be blown back into the room, which is exactly what you need to prevent.

Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Efficiently

If your air conditioner is not working efficiently it won’t solve your mold problem. So, it is important to keep your air conditioner maintained in good working order at all times. Clean your air conditioner’s filters once a month, it is easy to do this by yourself and have a professional technician inspect your air conditioner once a year to make sure it is working properly and the condensation is being drained. If you do this you will elongate the air conditioner’s lifespan.

Always set temperatures as noted above, not too cold, because this may cause condensation. If you do notice any mold growth speak to our mold experts at Mold Removal Oakland, who are always happy to help.
